Tech Talk From Mary

The following tips apply to all sewing machines:

  • Needles should be changed every 8-10 hours of sewing time or every 3 to 5 bobbins.  A new needle will make all the difference in a project.

  • Proper Needles for the Project - Always use the proper needle for your project.  Jeans/denim needles are made for hemming bluejeans.  The point of the needle is sharper and the needle itself is stonger.  While Universal needles are appropriate for most sewing tasks; there is also a quilting needle that works great for piecing quiilts with lots of bulk at the seam intersections.  Doing lots of Machine Embroidery?  There are also specialty needles for this as well as a perfect needle for Metallic threads.  Stop by and let the staff at Sharman's Sewing Centers show you all the needles made for your sewing.  We recommend having a variety of needles on hand.

  • Thread Quality – Sharman’s Sewing Centers sell high quality thread not only for normal sewing and serging but also for embroidery and quilting.  Both locations offer a huge selectioin of thread with two goals in mind:      1 – to protect your Pfaff and/or Baby Lock sewing machine investment and 2 – to enhance your every sewing project.  Poor quality thread breaks more frequently, causes machine jams, and leaves more lint throughout the inside of your machine.

  • Match the needle to the type of Thread - One challenge we see alot in service, is not matching the needle size to the type of thread being used.  Thread breakage or poor stitch quality can be the result of not using the correct size of needle.  Heavier decorative threads such as Sulky 12 weight would require a needle with a larger eye such as the 130N or Top Stitch needle.

  • Use the correct Bobbin for the Machine Brand and Model -  always use the correct bobbin for your machine.  Most models in every brand have a specific bobbin manufactured for it.  Using the incorrect bobbin will cause the stitches to form incorrectly.  Bobbin winding is most important.  If the bobbin thread is not would firmly onto the bobbin, you'll be disappointed in the quality of the stitch.  When you wind a bobbin, hold onto the thread tail until the thread has wound for a few seconds.  Be sure to snip off the tail of thread, then continue winding the bobbin.  No machine likes to sew with a "mushy" bobbin so take care in winding your bobbins.

  • Service your machine annually - Last but certainly not least, Having your sewing equipment serviced yearly is a good idea. Our service department will perform a 19-point check including checking for timing, feed dog height, and needle bar height just to mention a few. The Service Technicians at Sharman's are certified sewing machine repair technicians and take pride in their work.

Keep you and your machine happy, don't forget your yearly check-up!

Very Important

Serge protection The incredible sewing machines available today offer more features than ever.  Because of the computerized adavantages of these sewing/embroidery machines it is important to take care of these awesome machines just like you would your favorite computer!

When you purchase your new Pfaff and/or Baby Lock computerized sewing/embroidery machine, Sharman's recommends the purchase of a quality surge protector.  Failure to use surge protection on your new machine could result in damage to the boards in your machine, leading to costly repairs.  We recommend Panamax serge protectors, which are available at Sharman’s Sewing Centers.
