Our Story

Combine a love of sewing
with a love of people . . .
What do you get? Sharman's Sewing Center!
Sharman can't even remember when she began to love sewing! Ma Carter, her maternal grandmother, said she was about 5, but Sharman remembers the beginning as 8th grade sewing classes. By the time she reached high school, she went shopping with friends and sketched the outfits they tried on. Then she went home and sewed them herself. One of her most vivid memories is shopping with her mother to buy fabric for a final school project. It was an anxious moment: the fabric cost $3.00 a yard! She made every cut with the utmost care!
Sharman loves color, and she found a passion in decorative sewing: embroidery, cut-work, applique, monogramming, silk ribbon embroidery, and especially decorative monograms. She also discovered that she has a gift for understanding how a machine works. She loves to share that knowledge because "If you understand why a machine does what it does, you can make it do anything!"

In 1984, Richard and Sharman opened Sharman's Sewing Center in Longview. They started with just 900 square feet, a few bolts of fabric, Pfaff sewing machines, and a goal:
From the very beginning, Sharman's Sewing Center has been committed to providing East Texas with a unique and creative sewing center, offering the highest quality products and the best customer service.
In 1996, a second Sharman's Sewing Center store opened in Tyler. And by 2012, the Longview store moved to its current location with more than 10 times as much space!  Both stores offer a wide array of beautiful cotton fabrics, supplies, specialty notions, books and patterns, along side Pfaff, Baby Lock, and Brother Sewing, Quilting and Embroidery machines.
Working through the many changes of the last 3 years, in December 2021 Sharman closed the Tyler store location to have the time and energy to focus on the original location in Longview.

At Sharman's, we consider it a great privilege to serve the sewing, quilting, and embroidery community of East Texas. We love being able to share unique experiences with our customers. We've been privileged to host nationally-known teachers like Nancy Zieman, Jenny Haskins, Hope Yoder, and Martha Pullen for her Love of Sewing Retreat sponsored by Baby Lock.

Sharman's Sewing Center Mission Statement: to continually strive to provide the highest quality products at a fair price in an honest, friendly, and educational environment. We strive to teach and encourage the knowledge and love of the many facets of sewing, embroidery and quilting. We will always strive for the absolute best in customer service. Our goal will always be to treat others as we wish to be treated.
We seek to provide a unique sewing experience for our customers, the best customers in the world!
